Page. 93 Red portals and white body. The next place which we reached was the " The AFRICAN VILLAGE. ". On the outside platform a group of the blacks were squirming around going through their native dances, and all the while the lecturer made frantic motions and exclamations to the audience waving them on toward the ticket office. On the opposite side of the street we saw the other entrance to the " STREETS of CAIRO " or the " BEAUTIFUL ORIENT ". It had a tall plain front painted a light grey color which was covered with queer looking characters and signs. These were called Hieroglyphics and were used by the ancient Egyptioans as their language. It is said that they used 1000 of these symbols to express themselves clearly and correctly. They were sculptured in the monuments thoroughout Egypt. These hieroglyphics consisted of representa tions of moons, sun, stars, animals, fishes, human forms and many others. These characters on the entrance to the " STREETS OF CAIRO " were painted In all the colors of the rainbow- red,green,blue yellow etc. The Ballyhoo at this entrance consisted of a few Oriental dances and Then there suddenly appeared upon the scene six Nubian pipers dressed In white shirts with red sashes around their waists who immediately Proceeded to play the following selection : " She never saw the STREETS Of Cairo, On the Midway she has never been etc. " A short distance Beyond we stopped before the entrance to the " OLD PLANTATION " to take In the sights.
