The Diary: Pan American Expo

The Diary: P A G E. 77. the chariots would whirl, giving the passengers a good shaking up every time they would turn the curve. This was one of the most enjoyable attractions on the Pan American Midway. From here we could see up the Midway to the "STREETS of CAIRO" and Dreamland, Cora Beckwiths show and several others. Cora Baeckwith was the champion women swimmer of the world and gave daily exhibitions at her home on the Midway. As we passed up the street we would be startled every once in a while by the sharp cry of a Jap as he rushed by pulling his jinrickisha with his passengers. We reached the "ROYAL GYPSY CAMP " At the entrance the spieler was exhibiting a long row of gypsies dressed in velvets, gay shawls , rings in their ears and completly covered with spangles and bright colored ornaments. Their complexion was of a light brown and their hair was straight and jet black.While we stood in front of the show the gypsies proceeded to sing several gypsy songs and which they done remarkably well. A little gypsy girl of 9 or 10 years was next introduced as the " Child Mind Reader and great Mathematician " The spieler then began his recital of the wonders this child could perform and the attractions on the inside of the Camp to draw the people in but not caring to see this show we passed a little farther on to the " WILD WATER SPORTS ". The entrance to this show was hung with bright colored banners showing a few of the performances to be seen on the inside and on the extreme top stood a large life like statue of an elk.
